Greenhouse Gas Assessments

Carbon footprint analysis, now offered by Climate Smart Missoula.

If you are a Missoula-area non-profit or small business that wants to reduce your carbon emissions, knowing your carbon footprint is a great place to start. Climate Smart can help.

Have you ever wondered about the carbon emissions from your employees commutes, or your energy bill to power and heat your building, or even purchases like food and paper?

We can find out all of this information through a Greenhouse Gas Assessment (aka GHG inventory, carbon footprint analysis or carbon accounting). This can help us find the right amount of carbon offsets for your organization to purchase, and, more importantly, help you reduce your operation's carbon emissions. Tracking and understanding these data is a critical first step, because we can't change what we can't measure!  If you might be interested, give us a shout using the contact form on the right. If you've got more questions, check out the FAQ accordion below.

Ideally, we will be able to help establish a representative baseline year for your emissions, and then continue to track your emissions on an annual or biannual basis. This will let us know if the actions we take to reduce emissions are working and help us develop decarbonization strategies for fellow organizations.

The tool we use to complete these assessments is the new Low-Emitters GHG Emissions Calculator tool from the EPA Center for Climate Leadership. If you're a DIY kind of person, you can visit this EPA site and download the calculator and go it alone. The tool itself and the Inventory Guidance help sheet can be found at the bottom of the page.

Why do a ghg assessment?
Understanding your organization's carbon footprint is a fantastic first step to ultimately lowering our emissions.
Who does these?
Thus far, we have worked with a local house of worship to conduct a greenhouse gas assessment and advised on how they can lower their carbon footprint. Small non-profits and businesses are great candidates for greenhouse gas assessments, and help demonstrate to their customers and users that they are committed to being stewards of our planet.
How long will this take?
The assessment process itself should only take a few work-days, but tracking and collecting the relevant data take communication and collaboration between you and us. Regardless, we would hope to have your assessment wrapped up in just a couple of work weeks, and can advise and offer recommendations for next steps from there!
how much will this cost
A nominal fee of just a couple hundred bucks, prorated to the size of your organization.
What else should I know?
We will use documents like your energy bills, annual budgets, travel logs and purchase ledgers to determine your footprint. Additional information like building size and models of major appliances. Which documents you want to include and activities you want to track can be flexible based on the type of organization you run, but we'll establish a baseline amount of data to include. Additionally, we would love to ensure that the recommendations and suggestions for mitigating your emissions moving forward are tailored to your organization's needs, goals and financial status.

This isn't for me, I'll just purchase a carbon offset.

We totally understand, and hope you consider this option in the future! Just click the button below to be taken back to the offset purchasing page, where you can still use a basic and free calculator to determine your carbon footprint, or go straight ahead and make an offset purchase.
